Slate Communications is seeking an experienced, part-time, communications specialist to join our growing marketing and public relations firm. This position will work under the management of the Chief Communications Officer by fulfilling the communications and project management needs of the firm. We enjoy what we do and believe the work we do meets the needs of our clients; we're looking for a communications specialist who is willing to learn and teach us as well. SUMMARY:
Provides on-site public information and marketing support to the City of Castle Pines, CO, with special emphasis on marketing, public relations, advertising, and social/digital media.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all inclusive.

  • Contributes to the development and implementation of the City’s public relations and marketing strategies, plans, policies and procedures

  • Directs press relations including preparation of news releases and feature articles, interview requests, media training and tracking

  • Advises City staff with information dissemination, advertising, web page development and web updates, social media and marketing

  • Advises management on community relations projects and activities and coordinates departmental involvement in various types of public events

  • Makes decisions concerning outsourcing of projects and coordinates production with external vendors including marketing agencies, mail houses, printers, media and independent contractors

  • Coordinates with the Slate creative and marketing team to produce a wide variety of projects including communication plans, marketing campaigns, posters, fliers, web-based applications, brochures, newsletters, speaking notes, invitations, calendars, ads, presentations, press releases, feature stories, etc., using social media platforms, website pages and traditional outreach methods

  • May create, coordinate and assist with production of videos

  • Works with marketing and creative team to develop advertising/promotional campaigns and contracts for print, radio, digital and television broadcast media

  • Supports emergency communications with after hours or on-call duties as needed

  • Consults with City Manager and City Council members on strategic communications

  • Develops relationships with community members and organizations to further the reach of communication efforts

  • Contributes to coordination of quality control procedures for producing high quality publicity materials that will be distributed to the public


QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to interact effectively with City staff, vendors and the general public

  • Proficient in use of personal computer and a variety of software packages, including Word, Power Point, Excel, Adobe Acrobat and project management programs. Experience with website CMS (WordPress) required.

  • Proficiency in all aspects of social media, including best practices on approved platforms, metric tracking, strategic campaign development and promotions.

  • Organizational and technical skills to schedule and manage social media and website updates

  • Ability to conceptualize and analyze solutions for public information assignments, develop communications plans and collaborate with stakeholders to ensure communication success

  • Applicant must be detailed oriented and include in their cover letter their favorite candy

  • Ability to research, write, and edit information to develop a final product that is customer-friendly

  • Ability to make effective written and oral presentations

  • Photography and video skills desired

  • Ability to manage multiple work assignments and meet strict deadlines

  • Familiarity with local municipal government policies, public works, planning, development, transportation trends, and best practices desired


EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing or Communications or related field from an accredited college or university, 7 years or more related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Proficiency with AP style writing required.


LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers and the general public.

REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Current driver's license.
