ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Communications Specialist is responsible for developing and executing strategic communication plans that enhance transparency, build trust, and foster engagement between the municipality and the community it serves. This role crafts compelling narratives, coordinates multi-channel messaging, and supports proactive outreach on local gov initiatives, programs, and emergency communications.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategy and content creation for communications campaigns
Advises City/client management on community relations projects and activities
Translate complex policy and municipal information into clear, accessible, and engaging content
SECONDARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Client “ownership” of assigned clients
Develop internal teams to accomplish client projects
Lead content development for key public-facing initiatives (e.g., comprehensive plans, budgets, infrastructure updates).
Day to day decision making authority
Assist Project Manager for communications tasks
Authority to mobilize all Slate resources when required
Lead communications for Council presentations and inquiries
Strategic government communications consultation for all Slate clients
Assist Project Manager to define project scopes, requirements, and tasks
Contributes to the development and implementation of the public relations and marketing strategies, plans, and policies
Advise clients on information dissemination, advertising, web page development and web updates, social media and marketing
Directs press relations including preparation of news releases and feature articles, interview requests, media training and tracking
Coordinates with the Slate creative, communications, and marketing team to produce a wide variety of projects including communication plans, marketing campaigns, posters, fliers, web-based applications, brochures, newsletters, speaking notes, invitations, calendars, ads, presentations, press releases, feature stories, etc., using social media platforms, website pages and traditional outreach methods
Supports emergency communications with after hours or on-call duties as needed

qualifications
Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Necessary Experience: Background in local government communications is required.
Client Interaction: Ability to schedule, organize, create agendas, and run client meetings via Zoom.
Collaboration: Proven ability to work effectively with the Slate team, third-party vendors, clients, and the general public.
Technical Proficiency:
Proficient with an Apple computer and software like Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, Google Workspace, and project management platforms such as Asana or Teamwork.
Experience with website CMS platforms like WordPress or Squarespace.
Skilled in social media best practices and scheduling tools.
Proficient in creating email newsletters using platforms such as Mailchimp, Constant Contact, or Squarespace.
Strong organizational and technical skills for website updates and content migration.
Detail-Oriented: Must include favorite candy in the cover letter to demonstrate attention to detail.
Time Management: Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet strict deadlines.
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree in marketing, journalism, public relations, communications, or a related field from an accredited college or university, with 3 years or more of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
REASONING ABILITY
Applying common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Current driver's license.
